Former QFI and Bell, Buri-Buri Plaza
This store was a QFI from 1959 (according to old Chain Store Age articles
on this store) until 1992 or so when Yucaipa switched it over to the Bell
brand. It finally closed in 2004, and as of 12/19/06, is to be replaced
with "Pacific Market" according to new signage.

Safeway (and Longs, Bally's (ex-Service Merchandise), etc.), former White
Front and later Brentwood, El Camino/Spruce
The entire building that comprises this shopping center was once part of
the White Front chain; later on, Brentwood Markets (whose original store
was just a block away at Kenwood and Hazelwood) took over one of the parcels
while Longs took another and Service Merchandise took a third with several
other stores filling the gap. Safeway's takeover of Brentwood in 1983
gave them this site, and in the early 2000s, after Service Merchandise's
closure, they planned to expand into the spot. However, Bally's Total
Fitness procured the Service Merchandise space instead.

Smart and Final, former Brentwood, Kenwood/Hazelwood (near El

This store's front signage design was also used at the old Mission Road store;
the chain itself received its name from being located here (in the South
San Francisco neighborhood of Brentwood). I don't think this ever operated
as a Safeway, as Brentwood had moved to the White Front site across the street
a few years before the takeover.

Rancho Market, former Siri's, Purity and Villa Super Market, Hillside

I wasn't around when this was a Purity location, but I did go to it once
when it was Villa Super Market. The current sign tower was much higher,
though the Villa Super Market sign itself was hand-painted. After Villa
closed, the site remained dormant for about two or so years before reopening
as Rancho Market. A photo from the San Francisco Public Library collection
shows that this location was first a Siri's, before becoming Purity (the
old tall sign once held attached Siri's lettering).
