SAN FRANCISCO
Safeway, 3350 Mission (at Randall)
This example of the Marina protoype is currently being remodeled inside,
but the exterior retains some of its older characteristics, particularly
the classic "circle S" logo used until 1982.

Looks like the original row lighting was removed in favor of hanging
light fixtures, similar to those at the Marina Boulevard store.

Former Safeway, later MacFrugal's, now A. Silvestri, 2630 Bayshore
One of two Marina sites in San Francisco no longer used as a Safeway (the
other being 345 Williams), this building became the showroom for the statue
manufacturer across the street ca. 2000. This was Safeway's southernmost
site in town, as the Daly City border begins at the end of the store parking
lot.

Just down the street from that former Safeway is a one-time Cala store, which
looks very similar to the existing one on South Van Ness Avenue in the Potrero

Cala is actually a former Siri's and Purity, while this store does not
have either lineage.)

The other marina Safeway site currently not used by the chain in SF, this

The flagship store was originally built with the "pylon" architecture in
the mid-1950s, and reworked into the marina shape in the 1960s (though its
arch, with its variable-width sweep, differs greatly from every specficially
built marina store, which generally had a fixed-with arch). With the
closure of the Clement St. location in 1995, it is the only remaining store
in San Francisco from that era of construction. Unfortunately, the
remodel resulted in the addition of a flat drop ceiling, obscuring the marina
ceiling.

Safeway (demolished), 735 7th Avenue (between Cabrillo and Fulton)
This smaller Marina prototype lacks the external winged sections of every
other specimen in The City, due to a smaller footprint. Justin Karimzad
at the Groceteria board noted this store is actually older than the Marina
location itself; there were several wingless marinas built, including San
Mateo (now demolished), Santa Clara, and Winnipeg. As of 1/7/07, this
store is now
closed,
to be replaced with a Lifestyle unit. (The building was finally razed
in early March 2007.)

The Marina Safeway, forefather to many others of similar design across the
country, was built in 1959 and later made a cameo appearance in the classic
Steve McQueen movie "Bullitt." It has also earned the reputation as
a supermarket where one can actually pick up a date in the aisles. (That
was a result of Armistead Maupin's "Tales Of The City" book series.)

A replacement for a 1970s-era Albertsons store that later was taken over

victim of the 2006 store closings by the chain. The Rite Aid next door
continues to operate however (that store replaced a Payless that had been
