Jim-Denny's Burgers, 816 12th Street (between Terminal Way and I Street) (New, 11/10/06)
Pretty damn good old school burger joint which has been serving since 1936.  New ownership has given some (much-needed) extended hours to the place, a new outdoor dining area, as well as a few non-burger menu items.

Goodyear store, 1121 I Street (New, 11/10/06)
This Goodyear store dates back to at least the 1960s, judging from the vintage, non-italic lettering here.  On this visit I did not have time to photograph the Goodyear diamond sign (which I think still has the old lettering as well).

Former Woolworth's, 10th and K (New, 11/10/06)
This store has stood vacant for at least a decade (the chain went kaput in 1997) if not more.  It is located in the one part of the K Street pedestrian mall that has not seen any growth (unlike the end near Downtown Plaza, and the section near the convention center).  The city of Sacramento has purchased many of the closed businesses in the area and may redevelop it at some point.  I was motivated to find this building after I saw it on a Flickr photo, and had not seen it before in person despite going by that block many times in the past.

Frank Fat's, L Street (New, 11/10/06)
The Fat family has operated several Sacramento-area Chinese restaurants for decades, and I'm pretty sure this was the first one - in many ways, the Fats are to Asian cuisine as the Paragarys are to contemporary American food in the region (and, to some extent, what the Haines family of the 33rd Street Bistro is trying to emulate with multiple city locations).  The parking garage behind it also looks vintage, with the 1960s lighted sign...

Togo's, K Street (New, 12/14/06)
The buildings near this suffered a fire sometime in late November or early December of this year, with several having to be demolished.  With the K Street pedestrian mall's retail scene frustratingly stagnant as is, this situation has only increased the redevelopment talk for the area (particularly around the Cathedral Square light rail station).

According to Storewanderer, the store once occupied both stories of the building; later on, the second story was dedicated to employee training.  Currently, a development struggle is occuring over the conversion of the top floor into lofts.

Small supermarket in Del Paso Heights, across the street from the former marina Safeway.

former Safeway, now Market Basket, 3845 Marysville (New, 12/14/06)
This store opened up as a Safeway in the 1960s, in the marina architecture - one of two in the Sacramento area.  In 1994, it reopened as an independent grocery, Market Basket, which still operates today - the only full-service grocery store in the impoverished Del Paso Heights district.  One unique feature is the stucco front, placed a few feet in front of the original marina windows, instead of replacing them entirely.

Former Phillips 66 station and Wonder Mini Market and Gasoline and Tune-Up Masters, now Master Oil, 2025 Broadway (at 21st Street) (New, 12/14/06)
The space-age canopies clearly identify the station's former occupant.  Phillips 66 once had a presence in Northern California (and the West Coast) thanks to its late-1960s acquisition of Tidewater, but antitrust concerns and other financial issues ultimately scuttled these operations by the mid-1970s.  Phillips currently (as ConocoPhillips) owns Union 76 as a gas station brand.

KMart, 5100 Stockton Boulevard (New, 1/14/07 - photos taken 1/13/07 by Chris Sampang and Charles Hathaway)
The only remaining Kmart in Sacramento*, this one has retained 1960s wall text and the distinctive 1960s signage.
*This and the Mack Road KMart were the only two in the city proper, but the Foothill Farms location used a Sacramento mailing address.

former KMart Foods and Farmers, now Big Lots, 5100 Stockton (New, 1/14/07 - photos taken 1/13/07 by Chris Sampang and Charles Hathaway)
Kmart ran its own supermarkets in the 1960s via Allied, though these would ultimately be divested.  Big Lots only uses part of the old KMart Foods space (some of it was incorporated into the main store).  According to Groceteria's webmaster, this had a 5150 Stockton Boulevard address as a Farmers supermarket.

former Dairy Queen, now El Michoacano #2, 4591 Fruitridge (New, 1/14/07 - photos taken 1/13/07 by Chris Sampang and Charles Hathaway)
Located just a block from the unincorporated Fruitridge Pocket area, this restaurant was closed temporarily due to health code violations, but has since reopened.  Prototype seems to be a mix of the curved-roof style in Davis and Redwood City, and the classic front seen at most 1970s-era Dairy Queens.

former Raley's and Compton's, now Rick's Uptown Market, 1700 Capitol Avenue (New, 2/14/07)
Operated as Compton's until the late 1990s, in a time when this area of Midtown was suffering from crime issues.  (Several new developments and restaurants in the area over the last five years attest to significant gentrification in these blocks.)

Tower Theatre, 2508 Land Park Drive (at Broadway) (New, 2/14/07)
This Art Deco landmark lent its name to the neighborhood, and ultimately a record chain that originally took up a storefront in the theater structure.  An old neon sign for the record chain still exists on the building, though Tower Records itself left  for its own building by the mid-1960s.

former Safeway and Tower Records, now R5 Records/Video, 2500 16th Street (at Broadway and Land Park Drive) (New, 2/14/07)
Although this building lasted from the 1940s to 1955 as a Safeway, it would become best known (starting in the 1960s) as the primary Tower Records location, once the record store finally moved out of the nearby Tower Theatre.  (The first freestanding location however was at Watt and El Camino in Arden-Arcade, opened in 1960.)  According to this Bee article, Tower Records' founder will soon open a new record store in this very structure.

Tower Liquor, 1525 Broadway (New, 2/14/07)
NOT related to the record store chain or theater, but rather named for the neighborhood.  From a Land Park history book's photo collection, this apparently is the site of a 1930s Union 76 station, which was in operation when the Tower Theater was built.

former Lucky, Compton's, Land Park Foods, Welco Supermarket and Del Rio Supermarket, now Prime Supermarket, 4408 Del Rio Road (at Sutterville and South Land Park) (New, 2/14/07)
According to Justin Karimzad, the drugstore in this shopping center (Land Park Drugs) was once connected to this store via an indoor pathway.  Despite the name changes, the carts still have Welco Supermarket written on them (but look to be old Lucky carts with stickers covering up any old logos).  From looking through old Sacramento Bee articles, this unit closed as a Lucky in 1983, and operated as Compton's until 1997.
