DALY CITY/BROADMOOR
Note: Broadmoor (an unicorporated community entirely surrounded
by Daly City) is included in this section.
Former Safeway, later liquor store and furniture store, now demolished,
Washington/Briggs (near Junipero Serra) (new, 9/29/06)
These photos of a late-1950s marina store were taken sometime in 2001, as
the store was being demolished. By spring 2002, newly built Krispy
Kreme and In-N-Out locations were opened on the site.

Former Cala, now Manila Oriental Market, King Plaza
According to a post on the old Groceteria board, this store closed as
a Cala in the early 1980s. In the early 90s, the space was vacant,
before being taken over by Manila Oriental.

Home Depot, former JCPenney, Westlake
I don't think this is the original building, but a two-story (with escalators!)
freestanding JCPenney was located there until about five years ago. The
building was later used by a wholesale book seller.

Safeway, former Westlake Market? and Brentwood, Westlake
This store did not operate as a Safeway until the 1980s (according to another
Groceteria old board post); now, it is the only Safeway in the entire city
limits of Daly City. According to former Safeway employee Tom McGowan,
this was once a Brentwood.

Former Thrifty and Rite-Aid, later Linens and Things?,
Mission/Flournoy
This store was a Thrifty up to the point Rite Aid bought that chain; the
store remained open until about 2001-2002. In early 2006 it was a
linen/blanket store, I think "Mattress and Linen Outlet," but this seems
to have closed up shop mid-summer. (A Mattress and Linen Outlet location
opened recently in a former video store on Junipero Serra Boulevard; this
may have been a relocation from this former Thrifty.)

Albertsons, former Lucky, Mission Plaza
The shopping center (replacing an old motel) opened in 1998 with this Lucky
location, which converted to Albertsons after the merger. The original
Lucky store (at San Pedro and Junipero Serra, near the Colma BART station)
stayed open as Albertsons until 2005 or so, and is now being redeveloped
as a new site for the City Toyota car dealership.

Smart and Final, former Mayfair? and Bell, and Cala, Mission/Bismark next
to Mission Plaza
This Cala pretty much closed up shop right as Mission Plaza (and its Lucky)
opened. The sign structure and the building itself are from the supermarket
days, though a new "false roof" was added to mask the original arched
roofline.

Kukje Supermarket, former Mayfair and Brentwood and Safeway? and
Any Mountain and REI, Broadmoor Center (Junipero Serra/Garden
Gateway)
I had heard from a few people I had spoken to years ago that this store was
once a Safeway, but in any case, throughout the 90s, the site was used for
non-supermarket purposes. However, in the early 2000s, this site returned
to its original use as a supermarket, which involved the removal of a wooden
false front that Any Mountain and REI had used to obscure the "bubble top"
of the building's design (which still exists, though not visible in the
photo).

Longs Drugs, Serramonte Center
A QFI (which closed in the early 80s) was located across the hallway at the
site of what is now Lerner/New York and Company; Justin Karimzad posted on
the Groceteria board on 2/23/07 that this drugstore has now closed.

Former Safeway, now Pacific Super, St. Francis Square
Store dates back to the mid-1960s or so (according to the architectural records
linked in a post at the current Groceteria board), and probably became Pacific
Super at the tail end of the 1980s. As a kid, I'd go here several times
a year (in its current incarnation).
